Artist Profile and Statement: My name is Lesanne Burchell, I’m originally from San Francisco, California. I think I have always been an artist, drawing, painting, sculpting, and since moving to Ohio, I have been making Public Art Sculptures. I’ve been very lucky to have learned so much regarding all facets of Public Sculpture, thanks to Mike Sohikian. He is truly a Maestro at his craft!
Elusive Courtship
When I started this sculpture, it evolved around a half circle of a metal grate that formerly sat in front of a huge ceiling fan in the Saint Charles Hospital in Oregon, Ohio. Their discard became my prize. I decided to make a peacock front on opposite sides using a small beam to support the sculpture with the fan grate that would become the tail feathers opened over eleven feet in length. Added steel “feet” for balance. And painted a blue peacock and a peahen of shades of brown teal and lavender.
The premise of the title; “Elusive Courtship” happens because Peacocks are proud birds. They are famous for displaying their beautiful tails. And in doing so, they tend to let their tails not only attract mates, yet actually, their tails can hide mates from view.
This sculpture was first exhibited at Grosse Pointe, Michigan and was held over for 3 years.
Peacock Nouveau
This is one of my first sculptures. It is made of concrete over a steel armature with sheets of metal mesh wire wrapped in between layers of fiber reinforced concrete. The peacock sits upon a steel branch with a metal rose accent. Then placed upon an upright stone. The tail made of expandable metal also acts as a brace to support the figure, as well as complete the sculpture. Hand painted and detailed down to the flattened nails on the head of the peacock’s Crest.
I have received very many compliments during installation and when I have been over to ‘visit’ this sculpture. I love the location and city in which it has permanently landed!
